Wooden Deck Repair Services

Your One Call for Custom Decks in the KC Metro Area.

Does your deck need repaired or replaced?

For a great price, a deck can add value to your home in the form of personal enjoyment and monetary gain should you decide to sell. But when a deck falls into disrepair, it can be a hazardous problem to deal with. Luckily, restoration is affordable, and at Powell Exteriors KC we’ll get the job done right so you won’t have to pay for repairs again.

Your wooden deck should be a point of pride on your home, not a platform you have to warn people against walking on. We love to bring decks back to their former glory. Let us lend our experience to your project so you can start using your deck again!

Frequently occurring issues

A wooden deck is built to last, but sometimes it runs into some obstacles. Decking really takes a beating. People walk on it, chairs get dragged across it, barbecues spit grease on it, and of course it gets hit with whatever the elements want to throw out there.

Mold & Rot

Even if swept regularly, and you avoid spraying your deck with a garden hose, mold and rot can still creep in.

Stairs

Railings

Nearly as important as stairs, railings are often leaned on, and if they’re damaged, you’ll be in for a nasty fall.

How Do You Protect a Deck From Mold?

Mold grows where moisture is present, so keeping your deck dry is key. With a few simple upkeep tasks, you can prevent mold from taking hold and keep your deck looking its best.

Here are some steps you can take to protect your deck from mold:

  • Keep it clean: Regularly sweep debris off your deck to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Seal your deck: Apply a good-quality sealer every few years to create a protective barrier against moisture.
  • Promote sunlight: Trim nearby trees or move objects that might create shade to allow more sunlight onto the deck, as sunlight can naturally deter mold growth.
  • Ensure proper drainage: Ensure water doesn’t pool on your deck by properly sloping and drainage for rainwater.
  • Reduce humidity: Consider using a dehumidifier if your deck is in a humid area or lacks air circulation.

If you see a dark or discolored stain on your deck, there’s a chance it might be mold. Mold often looks fuzzy or slimy and can be black, green, brown, or even white. It thrives in moist environments, so check areas that don’t get much sunlight or are frequently wet.

You can test by spraying a small amount of bleach on the stain; if it disappears after a few minutes, it’s likely mold. Always use caution when handling bleach and use it in a well-ventilated area.

If you suspect a mold issue, our team can help assess the situation and provide a proper removal and prevention plan.

Filling rotted wood on a deck is essential in maintaining its structure and appearance. Addressing these issues promptly prevents further damage and ensures the safety and longevity of your deck.

Here’s how we fill rotted wood, bringing your deck back to life:

  • Identify the rotted areas: Inspect your deck for any signs of decay, such as soft spots, discoloration, or a musty smell.
  • Remove the rot: Use a chisel or a similar tool to carefully remove the decayed wood until you reach solid wood.
  • Apply wood hardener: Apply a wood hardener to the affected area to stabilize the remaining wood and prepare it for filling.
  • Fill with wood filler: Use an exterior-grade wood filler to pack in the space where the rotted wood was removed. Smooth it out to match the surface of your deck.
  • Seal and finish: Finally, seal or stain your deck to protect it against future moisture damage and enhance its appearance.

A deck railing should not wiggle. If your railing is loose or shaky, it could be a sign that it’s not secure, which can be a safety hazard. Railings are supposed to be firm and sturdy to keep everyone safe.

If you notice that your railing wiggles, the first step is to check if any screws or bolts are loose. Tightening them often solves the problem. However, if tightening doesn’t work, the issue might be with the posts’ connection to the deck. In that case, it might need more structural support or even replacement if severely damaged.

If you’re unsure about fixing the problem yourself, contact our team. We can help ensure proper repair and safety.

Yes, it’s normal for new deck boards to crack over time. Wood is known to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. This can lead to small cracks forming as the wood adjusts to the outdoor environment.

These cracks are typically cosmetic and do not affect the deck’s structural integrity. Regular maintenance, such as sealing and staining, can help minimize cracking and keep your deck looking its best.

Filling small cracks in deck boards is generally unnecessary unless they are large enough to let water seep through or trap dirt. Usually, these minor cracks are not a problem and won’t affect the strength of your deck.

However, if the cracks are deep or wide enough to pose a safety hazard, it’s best to either replace the affected boards or fill the cracks with a wood filler specifically designed for outdoor use. This will help prevent further damage and keep your deck safe.

A wood deck typically lasts between 10 to 15 years. However, the lifespan of your deck can depend on factors like the quality of the wood, climate conditions, and how well it’s maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, staining, and sealing, can help extend the life of your deck, keeping it in good shape longer. With proper care, some decks can last even beyond the average lifespan.

Staining and sealing your deck every two to five years is recommended to maintain your deck’s beauty and durability.

Staining enhances the natural color of the wood and adds a layer of protection against sun damage, preventing the wood from fading or graying over time. Sealing provides a protective barrier that helps keep moisture out, reducing the risk of mold, mildew, and rot.

By following a regular staining and sealing schedule, you can prolong the life of your deck and avoid costly repairs or replacements in the future.

Repairs might be the way to go if the deck is mostly in good shape but has a few rotted spots or loose boards. This involves fixing those problem areas and can extend your deck’s life while saving you money. However, if the deck is old, with widespread damage or structural issues, replacement might be more cost-effective in the long run. A new deck can update your space and ensure safety, giving you a fresh start.
When replacing your deck, pressure-treated lumber is a great choice. It’s wood that has been treated with chemicals to help resist rot, insects, and moisture, making it a durable and cost-effective option. This type of lumber can last for many years with proper maintenance, and it’s widely available, making it a convenient option for deck projects.

I wish I could give Powell Exteriors 10 stars. Dave came out to the house and listened to what we wanted. He came up with ideas that fit into our budget. We called him several times with modifications and he was quick to return our call and get us the information we needed. We chose to go with their quote even though they were not the cheapest. Dave just made us comfortable with his knowledge, timely responses and the products they could offer. The crew was AMAZING. They showed up around the same time every morning and worked all day. When it was quitting time they stacked all their tools and the supplies neatly and cleaned up after themselves. They even swept the concrete. I have never seen a crew so clean. We tried to stay out of their way but they were polite anytime we had a question. They even came out and painted one of the downspouts to match the house. That was above and beyond. Give them a call you will not be disappointed.

Powell Exteriors completely replaced all the old windows in our house, which is a tricky 2-story. These photos show just a few of the quality windows they installed. We were impressed from the beginning with the strong business ethic when Dave, the co-owner completed our bid, then when Chris followed up with excellent communication about when to expect each step from delivery to installation, then with Jimmy & crew who efficiently and professionally installed each window with care. We love our woodwork, and there was not a scratch in the process as you can see. Small problems came up, as is normal with any home repair project, and they were handled kindly & professionally. With confidence, we completely recommend this company for your exterior project.
